Reliving the past

Reliving the past
Reviewed by Jonaid Iqbal
The world still remembers the horrors of 9/11 and the global impact of this tragedy. It altered the structure of society and effected a change in the psychology and behaviour of human beings.

Literary critic and author of six short story collections, Hameed Shahid has closely observed these changes in people’s attitude over the past eight years and written about it in his latest collection of 50 Urdu short stories, Pachas Afsaney.

Dr Tauseef Tabassum’s long essay, which appears as a preface should convince Hameed Shahid that he already has a place among the important short story writers of Pakistan.

The author has been labelled as a writer who has largely followed in the footsteps of Manto’s technique. Manto was famous for attracting the attention of the readers and exposing his characters’ psychology.

Shahid’s stories make your heart sink with sentimentalism. Consider the story, Marg Zar, included in the collection.

It records the transformation in the subcontinent’s social behaviour after 9/11, even though the story is ostensibly about a soldier’s attachment to his country, and how his death plunges his family in woe and sorrow. The tears that well up in the eyes of the mother cease abruptly. Iftikhar Arif, former chairman, Pakistan Academy of Letters, has called this story as a portrayal of the after-effects of 9/11 on our social structure.

The story Sworg main Suuar (Pigs found in paradise) is replete with references to peanuts, stray dogs and deaths of goats; all these words having found currency in every day lingo after Sept. 11. Thus there are quite a few things to be said in favour of the lingo and similes the writer has used, ‘We often felt the trick of the use of stylistic language throughout the book.’

The prominent short story writer Mansha Yad says that Hameed Shahid has experimented with diction and technique and in this way given something new to Urdu fiction.

Mitti Adam Khati Hae

Works of value
Literary endeavour of considerable merit...

By Dr Abrar Ahmad

Mitti Adam Khati Hai
By Mohammad Hamid Shahid
Academy Bezyaft, Karachi
Price: Rs 150 Pages: 122

There has been an over extended silence in the field of Urdu novel writing, making one wonder as to what stopped our writers from trying their hands at an art form as vast as life itself. The situation has suddenly changed during the last couple of years when novels of substantial merit started appearing one after the other.

'Mitti Adam Khati hay.' by Mohammad Hamid Shahid is the latest in the series. It's a short novel, and once you start reading the same brevity and the economic yet creative utility of words become its mainstay.

The central theme of the novel is the separation of east Pakistan in 1971. We may note here that the author belongs to a generation that was born and brought up as a Pakistani, having no traumatic recollections of the partition of 1947. The novel is one of the first creative pursuits addressing the split of our country by a member of this generation.

The story portrays two landscapes. One is the rural feudal setting in Punjab where the intricate human relations, the cruel dominance of the landlords and the psyche of the deprived is beautifully presented. From this locale the two main characters emerge. One is the narrator, who apparently announces his impartiality and assigns himself the task of only compiling a story. Soon we realise that he is an integral part of the central theme. From the same setup, Captain Salim emerges as the central character.

The other landscape is the battlefield of East Pakistan where Capt. Salim with other members of the fighting force approach the shores of Chittagong in a ship, all charged with a throbbing emotion to display their skill and bravery in order to save their country. But as they approach the coastal city, they perceive an air of hostility and enmity which dilutes their idealism into a haunting suspicion -- strong enough to demoralise them.

After they land, there is narrated a series of events which gives the reader a flavour of what happened, both in the battlefield and outside. The story ends with soldiers on a steamer waiting for Captain Salim in the dark of the night. He appears with Muniba, the Bengali wife of his fellow officer, who has fallen in love with him and has decided to leave her spouse, land and people. She is refused passage by other soldiers but helps the wounded Captain on to the boat. In the night of parting, Captain Salim catches a glimpse of Muniba who after being shot rises up, only to settle in the cruel ocean waves.

The following chapters contain a far more captivating narration which addresses the conclusions drawn from this adventure. The author beautifully philosophises the bitter realities and fate of the humans who fight for land both at micro and macroscopic levels. For land, he says, is destined to cover the dead bodies of humans only.

Water and soil are two dominant metaphors which in the perspective of a unified Pakistan convey a certain specific meaning. Soil is solid and firm while water moves restlessly and turns into a cruel tide when disturbed -- a tide which destroys any land.

The novel contains chapters with titles for each one -- a rare method adopted in a short novel. We usually witness such titles in voluminous works. The author could very well do without them. Nevertheless, it's an impressive novel which unfolds the talent of Mohammad Hamid Shahid as a competent novelist. By creatively utilising poetic metaphors in place of flat details he has infused an element of uniqueness in his work. A brace intact officer turns schizophrenic when he gets deprived of love and is haunted by memories of defeat and desertion.

In his incoherent thoughts, he remains fixed to the eternal truth of love and death. The author has affectionately dealt with the human situation and the novel bears a rare quality of becoming an integral part of the memory of any reader of Urdu fiction.

Urdu Afsana: Soorat O Ma’ana

The critical muse

Reviewed by Asif Farrukhi

The most glorious moment in the history of literary criticism as applied to the art of fiction occurred in all probability when Henry James chose to write about The Future of the Novel and linked the development of fiction as an expression of the human condition. In the essay, bearing the same name, he remarked that “Till the world is an un-peopled void there will be the image in the mirror.” In James’s memorable phrase, this mirror image provided “the great anodyne” enabling man to ponder over the larger realities of the imagined world. For James, it was fiction, particularly the novel, which could play this life-enhancing role. However, if we make any detailed effort to critically examine the contemporary trends in Urdu fiction, we would repeatedly find ourselves coming against the same dead end, and we would be left pondering that if the images in the mirror have become so distorted then surely we have seen the world turning into the un-peopled void of James’s world without the novel.

This chilling reminder of a world with a prospect of fiction becoming a limited resource has been occasioned by the publication of Hameed Shahid’s critical essays on the contemporary Urdu short story. He has dedicated this book to Hasan Askari and Shamsur Rahman Farooqi, the two major critics of fiction in Urdu. Alongside he has included the name of Mumtaz Shirin, paying tribute to the writer turned critic. This again reminds one of what Henry James would term “the critical muse.” This is the vantage point for Hameed Shahid who is a notable fiction writer himself with a number of books to his credit. The matters of fiction which he has chosen to write about are not questions of sterile academic debate for him but living issues related to the substance of his art. This sense of analysis brooding over questions of meaning and form, and the evidence of personal involvement blend well to make this one of the few important books of fiction criticism in Urdu to have emerged in recent years. While this should give you an idea of the value of the book, it will also tell you about the state of criticism in general.

Hameed Shahid has developed his arguments in a number of separate essays. However, there are two important points of departure in the case he builds. He is emphatic about the independence of the short story as a literary genre and not simply a diminutive form of the novel. He refuses to see the short story as a novel cut up in halves or chopped down to size. He gives a wider meaning to the term ‘afsana’ and, in doing so, raises questions about the meaning of the narrative. He sees a richer heritage behind this term as he links it to the various forms of narrative in use within our society rather than simply accepting it as an alien form introduced under western influence. This sense of infusing the short story with widened horizons is, to my mind, the most distinctive feature of Hameed Shahid’s work as a critic.

Although he is inclined to read the contemporary short story as a form with firm roots in the past, he has severely contested veteran critic Intizar Hussain’s sense of loss over the demise of the oral tradition. Locking horns with the senior writer, he has taken up the debate in a most interesting way. In spite of Intizar Hussain’s wishes, can the oral tradition be brought back and can it be used to malign or negate the modern short story? Hameed Shahid has raised this issue and one wishes that other critics should further develop the discussion around these themes.

Interesting and relevant in the context these themes, the critic is on less firm ground when he is writing of contemporary concerns such as terrorism and modern-day scientific breakthroughs. These essays seem sketchy and the critic has not really allowed his arguments to develop.

By far the longest piece in the book, and disproportionately large, presents a detailed array of all short-story writers in the 20th century. However, even then the writer can manage a few sentences or at the most a paragraph or two about each writer, managing to come up with general statements. What diminishes their value is that mistakes can come up, as when Abul Fazl Siddiqui is credited as being the author of ‘Sard Lahoo Ka Noha’ while even a cursory glance could have revealed that the book was actually written by his nephew, Nazrul Hassan Siddiqui, an established short-story writer himself. This is the same mistake which Mirza Hamid Baig has made in the compendium compiled by the Pakistan Academy of Letters. There is arbitrariness in the way the various writers are described. A pattern does not emerge but writers are merely piled up. This sort of attempt is best left to the modern-day tazkiras of the more academic critics.

Tucked away right at the end is an interesting piece on the author’s own creative process, which throws into sharp relief many of the arguments presented in the main body of work. But what use is criticism if it cannot be related to and measured against the creative work of the artist?
